Why I Love This Recipe

Just In Time For Summer!

There are few times in life when you try something truly unique. It's summer in LA and you can tell by the triple digit temperatures. We are boiling in the West!

Last night I wanted ice cream, but was looking for something different. Then it hit me.. what about infusing it with some flavored vodka? So I invited my good friend Latifah (also a BakeSpace member and a friend I have known since high school) over for a little taste test.

I was given three bottles of vodka from the good folks at Three Olives Vodka. The flavors they sent were root beer, tomato and espresso. My first try was the root beer - I thought it would be the safest to try. I haven't really tried many flavored vodkas except what you find at the local market.. you know the flavors.. orange, lemon and raspberry.

We made three batches last night (three variations of the same recipe until we got it right... all in the name of research). You don't expect it, but the vodka can give you a bit of a buzz... photo will be uploaded soon.

The vodka itself really smells like root beer which surprised me. I thought it would have more of an alcoholic smell. The color is clear so it will not change a drink's look. This recipe is perfect for an afternoon in the sun or on the patio as it really cools you down. The root beer flavor itself was quite nice and light in taste. I am not a huge vodka fan although I do enjoy a raspberry vodka in my chocolate martini and also in a glass of orange juice.

All in all, I really enjoyed the flavor and quality of the final product. It was definitely fun changing the recipe up with each try. I'm not really sure what to add to the tomato and espresso flavors, but it will be fun to play around. More on those flavors later..

If you have an ideas for the tomato or espresso vodkas let me know. I'm curious to find some new recipes to try.

Ingredients You'll Need

Here's what you'll need:
1/2 a blender full of vanilla ice cream (I would assume that fat free works fine too)
2 ounces root beer vodka (I used vodka from Three Olives Vodka)
2 ounces Seltzer water - optional, but it gives it a little fizz
6 ice cubes (more if you want it really cold and crunchy) - ice is a must as it will taste flat without it.

Directions

Mix all ingredients in a blender and mix on high for oh.. 20 seconds or until it blends to desired consistency.

Pour into glasses and share with friends.

Can I use real root beer instead of seltzer and vanilla vodka in place of root beer vodka? Sounds yum!
