Jazz & Beer-Infused Recipes for International Jazz Day 2017
The parallels between food and jazz will be celebrated April 30th at International Jazz Day (jazzday.com) events all over the world, including a flagship concert in Havana.
International Jazz Day was created by UNESCO, the United Nations and the Thelonious Monk Institute to commemorate jazz and its role in uniting people from different cultures.
As always, the flagship concert will pay tribute to the legendary Thelonious Monk. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Monk’s birth, and the team at North Coast Brewing Company (brewer of Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Ale) is determined to make Monk’s presence felt in the kitchen, as well as on the stage.

That’s why we’ve created this cookbook. It includes jazz/beer-infused recipes for a Cuban dinner that captures the spirit of this year’s big concert venue, as well as the great Thelonious Monk.
INFUSING CARIBBEAN DISHES WITH BEER:
The Belgian yeast used to ferment Brother Thelonious Ale provides a fruity character that complements tropical flavors like blood orange, lime, coconut and cardamom. In addition, the beer’s malty backbone infuses exotic esters into caramelized sugar reduction to make the perfect sweet flan (don’t try this with a bitter, hop-heavy IPA).
ABOUT NORTH COAST BREWING COMPANY:
Launched nearly 30 years ago as a modest brewpub, North Coast Brewing Company (Ft. Bragg, California) has grown to become one of the nation’s best-selling craft breweries.
We introduced Brother Thelonious in 2007 as a tribute to the great Thelonious Monk (the name is also a play on words – such Belgian-style ales are traditionally brewed by monks). Every bottle of Brother Thelonious sold helps support the Thelonious Monk Institute and jazz education (more than $1.2 million has been donated thus far). In addition, the brewery is home to the Sequoia Room, which was recently named “one of the finest-sounding jazz clubs in the country“ by Downbeat Magazine. North Coast Brewing Company is devoted to great craft beer and helping people enjoy the music often described as “America’s only true art form.“

Food and Jazz have a lot in common. They both blend flavors, textures and improvisation to stimulate the senses.
