Cookbook Recipe
Baklava
This recipe reminds me so much of wonderful times with friends and family in Turkey. Uncle Dallas makes a wonderful baklava. A clean paintbrush can substitute for a pastry brush for spreading the butter.

Cookbook Recipe
Overnite Sausage Casserole
A wonderful dish for eating in your pj's, playing games and making holiday mornings easy.

Cookbook Recipe
Mom Hutton's Whole Wheat Bread
The most difficult part of bread baking is waiting for it to rise. Bread is the ultimate comfort food. The kneading process is a way to release frustration, and one ends up with steaming goodness. Worth the effort!

Cookbook Recipe
Aunt Vera Salad (Aunt Tina's Twist)
Historical note: In the ancient past (long before TVs, cars and cell phones) Mandarin oranges were a tribute fruit, brought to the Chinese Emperors' Courts. They were grown by surrounding Asian kingdoms who paid tribute to China. Only if one was gifted some fruit could they be tasted. See here for how we have them to buy today: https://harvesttotable.com/a_history_of_the_mandarin_oran/

Cookbook Recipe
Basic Guacamole
A standby for Thanksgiving evenings playing cards around the table, when everyone is tired of cooking.

Cookbook Recipe
Multiple Pie Shells
This recipe makes buttery, flaky pie shells, easy to work with and good for most kinds of pie.

Cookbook Recipe
Polynesian Pileup
Kathy Brooks introduced us to the wonderful world of the pileup. What a fun way to gather!

Cookbook Recipe
Perfect Jellied Cranberry Sauce
As an alternative, whole berry cranberry sauce may be used, but slicing this is iffy. Enjoy!!!

Cookbook Recipe
Green Bean Casserole
We often traveled to Thanksgiving or Christmas gatherings. This dish is great, because you can travel the ingredients, but still contribute a delicious side dish to the family get-together. And so many varieties of green bean: fresh, frozen, long, short, French cut, Italian style, colorful...just like the people that eat them!

Cookbook Recipe
Sweet Potato Casserole
Thanks to Donna Brooks for this recipe. Like Donna it is so very sweet, and her recipe is a family favorite. The dish is easy to travel, and if made ahead can be heated up easily as the dinner meat is finishing. Is it veggie? Dessert? Who cares! Just pass it quickly, please!

Cookbook Recipe
Mrs. Cho's Dinner Rolls
When money is scarce, yeast roll ingredients are still affordable. My mom brought the fancy with shaped rolls, folded napkins and other touches that made simple meals special events.

Cookbook Recipe
Grandma Brooks' Turkey
Turkey seems to be a rite of passage. This is how my mom made turkey for years. Because side dishes are involved as well as turkey, a well-timed cooking plan comes in quite handy. My advice: read all directions days before, make ahead what you can, give yourself 1-2 hours extra time, and let a close friend or family member assist. For further encouragement watch the video. You've got this!

Cookbook Recipe
Creamy Cheddar Mashed Potatoes
We grew up with our kind of mashed potatoes and lots of gravy. So grateful for the new faces and new ingredients which have added richness and new possibilities to both our potatoes and our family.

Cookbook Recipe
Gergie's Salad
Thanks to Pam Pelley, a MOPS friend of Kathy Brooks, who 25 years ago gave a recipe from her family to Kathy's new little family, which then became a favorite of the Brooks family at large. Who knows where the recipe will travel next?

Cookbook Recipe
Mom's Chocolate Pie
Many of us gained wonderful in-laws when our siblings married, who treated us like extended family. Marie Webb was one of those rare individuals who mothered all around her. Her recipe is a small tribute to her generous heart. Thank you, Mom Webb. You are missed!

Cookbook Recipe
Turkey casserole with Creamy Mushroom Gravy
The souffle type egg topping is what makes this dish a Carol Brooks original. Fancy leftovers were Mom's specialty. Dad (JW) used to say he looked in the larder and saw nothing, from which Mom created a marvelous meal. Thanks for the creativity, Mom!

Cookbook Recipe
Creamy Corn
Cream corn is one of those dishes that dresses up special events, but feels just as comfortable at the everyday table. A favorite at our table.

Cookbook Recipe
Libby's Famous Pumpkin Pie
Where do family recipes come from? Many times from famous company test kitchens. Smart Moms and Grandmas have been reading labels for years. Here's a favorite, taken from the Libby's canned pumpkin label.

Cookbook Recipe
Buttermilk Pie
Before I had children, I went skiing and stayed at a lodge where they fed us very well and offered us their recipe book to take that excellent Deer Valley Ranch cooking home. This pie reminds me of that time. It also reminds me of the time my son made it for a friend, but that is his story to tell. I love recipes that invoke memory and spark conversation.

Cookbook Recipe
Pecan Pie
The South is almost as full of pecan recipes as pecan trees. I love this one, taken from a collection of New Orleans and Louisiana recipes called La Bonne Cuisine. The title of the book alone made me want to cook its yummy recipes. The classic rich buttery pecan flavor of this pie connects me to my Southern roots, full of family love, laughter and hospitality. Enjoy, y'all!

Cookbook Recipe
Nana's Pumpkin Roll
Kathy Brooks said her mom taught she and her sisters how to make pumpkin roll. They give it for gifts at Christmas and Thanksgiving to family and friends. See the video for a visual of how to roll a cake like a boss!

Cookbook Recipe
Fireside Coffee Mix
Early in my marriage an older neighbor gave me some Southern Living magazines, one with wonderful holiday recipes like this coffee. It has been a part of my cozy cold weather days at home and work since then. Thanks, Mrs. Conn from Missouri, whoever you are, for sharing with Southern Living.

Cookbook Recipe
Cranberry-Walnut Fruit Salad
This fruit salad has a good balance of sweet and tart fruits, so needs little added sweetener. As our family has become more health-conscious over the years, I am grateful for recipes like this one that provide alternatives to sugar-laden cranberry sauce and complement sweet meats so well.

Cookbook Recipe
Sweet Potato with Nut Topping
Sweet potatoes with juice are very sweet indeed. Between the sweetness and spices, with the rich nut topping, the lack of added calories is not missed in this simply healthy recipe.

Cookbook Recipe
Veggie-Rice Pilaf
So many holiday dishes are rich and heavy. This lighter take on holiday foods is a healthy and flavorful complement to more traditional main dishes. The grated vegetables add wonderful character, complexity and flavor to this rice. Be sure to watch the video for tips on cooking rice. No peeking!

Cookbook Recipe
Eggnog
We always knew we had transitioned to true holiday merriment when Mom broke out the eggnog. We were a non-drinking family so we got our rum in the flavoring only, but it was always a time to break out the German tureen and grog glasses. No matter how you felt about the flavor, you had to admire the pageantry and presentation involved in making the holiday eggnog.

Cookbook Recipe
Very Sweet Tea
When Kaye came home, everyone knew we were in for a taste treat. She knew how to make the tea so strong and sweet we just knew we would get sugar diabetes. The name stuck, and we still love it when she makes the tea. The key is to make it strong, then let the ice dilute it.
